I. About Chennai

Chennai (earlier called Madras), the capital of Tamil Nadu state, is one of the largest cities in India. The city is connected by direct international flights from several major airlines and is well connected to the rest of India with a large number of domestic flights. Chennai has one airport with the Anna international terminal and the Kamaraj domestic terminal. They are separated by a few hundred metres.

Chennai is a vigorous, cosmopolitan city and home to major information technology parks, industrial, business and commercial centres. Chennai is known as the "Detroit of India" with several major car companies including Hyundai, Ford, Nissan located here.

Marina Beach, one of the world's longest beach, stretches along the east of the city. Chennai is also a paradise for those who enjoy good dining. Fine, elegant restaurants feature international cuisine as well as savory, exotic dishes. There are several famous places near Chennai: Kancheepuram (known for its silk industry and for its temples), Mahabalipuram (where you can find mammoth seventh century stone sculptures), Bird Sanctuaries (Vedanthangal, Pulicat, etc.).

II. How to reach SRM University

The SRM University Main Campus (in Kattankulathur, near Potheri) is approx. 40 kms from Chennai city on NH 45, and approx. 20 kms from Chennai Airport. The nearest Bus stop and Railway station is POTHERI. The University is well connected by road, rail and air.

By Train: Those coming from other states in India by train, should get down at the Chennai Central Station, come out and cross the high road through the pedestrian subway and reach PARK suburban metro rail station. Two destination trains are available from Park suburban metro rail station to: (i) Tambaram, and (ii) Chengalpattu.

(i) If you take the train to Tambaram, then get down at Tambaram and reach the local bus stand there. Take a bus which goes towards MaraiMalaiNagar/Chengalpattu and inform the Driver/Conductor to Stop at SRM Engineering College near SRM Hotel. It is a 20 minute travel from Tambaram to reach SRM University. (Total Travel time from Chennai Central Railway Station will be around One Hour).

(ii) If you take the train to Chengalpattu, you can directly reach the SRM or Potheri railway station. SRM University is just opposite to the Potheri railway station.

Another option to reach SRM by Train is from the Thrisulam station that is located just opposite the Chennai Airport. Board on a train towards Tambaram and follow the instructions given above for reaching SRM University.

By Air: The Chennai airport code is MAA. International visitors may also reach Chennai through direct domestic connections from other airports such as Delhi (DEL), Bengaluru (BLR) and Mumbai (BOM).

The Chennai airport has three taxi services functioning from its premises (in approx. order of increasing fares):

The booking counters are available inside the terminal just outside baggage claim and also outside the terminal. Visitors can pre-pay the taxi fare at the respective counter and obtain a receipt before leaving the airport terminal. Pre-paid Taxi/cab fare can range from Rs. 500 - Rs. 1000 (USD 10 - 20 approx.). Rates differ based on the taxi company and the type of vehicle (air-conditioned or not).

Payments are usually required in local Indian currency (Indian Rupees). Currency exchange counters and ATMs are available withing the Airport Terminal. The ride from the airport to the SRM campus travelling on the NH 45 highway would take approximately 50 minutes.

Other taxicab services can be obtained outside the airport terminal; but, these are not pre-paid and not encouraged for first-time visitors.

During the daytime, one can also use the railway station from the Chennai Airport is Thrisulam, located just opposite the Airport. Board a train towards Tambaram and follow the instructions given above for reaching SRM University.

Note that hotels in Chennai city and near Chennai airport may take 1 to 1.5 hours to get to the conference venue. Please allow sufficient time for travel since traffic can be quite heavy for most of the day.
